Sarcopenia

Definition

Sarcopenia was originally introduced to describe age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass. There is no single universal operational definition; contemporary frameworks draw variously on muscle strength, physical performance, and muscle quantity. Under EWGSOP2, low strength indicates probable sarcopenia, low muscle quantity or quality confirms it, and poor physical performance indicates severe sarcopenia. Other consensus groups combine these components differently. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Why It Matters in Ageing Research

Sarcopenia matters because muscle weakness and reduced physical performance are associated with frailty, falls, disability, and loss of independence in later life. In ageing research, the term helps focus attention on functional muscle decline rather than muscle size alone, while the observational nature of many outcome studies limits causal interpretation.
